Frequently Asked Questions

  • Spiritual directors help people recognize, understand, and respond to the movement of God in their everyday lives (the simple, the complex, the comfortable, the painful, the joy, the sorrow, the boring, and the exciting). It is a sacred space. It is a judgment-free space. It is an unhurried space. It is a confidential space. It is a contemplative space. It isn’t quite therapy, although it can feel therapeutic. It isn’t quite coaching, although one can certainly learn tools for the faith journey. Ultimately, a spiritual director is a soul care companion who has been trained to help people discover what is alive and present in them right now.

  • Most people begin seeing a spiritual director because they are in a season of transition or because they are navigating grief or loss. Some are realizing what used to work for them in faith and spirituality doesn’t seem to work anymore. Some feel distant from God. Some are discerning a new direction in life like a vocation, a partner, or starting a family. Oftentimes people come to have a safe and healing space to process grief, pain, and loss. Sometimes faith leaders reach out because they feel burned out and alone. Spiritual direction is for anybody looking for a little help strengthening their relationships with God, self, and others.

  • Though I identify as a Trinitarian Christian and find a lot of meaning and hope in the story of Jesus, it’s important for me to create a safe and healing space for all who come my way. My goal is not for you to agree with my theological framework. My prayer is that I can host a freeing space that helps you move towards love, peace, meaning, and life. If I am not a good fit for what your soul needs, I’d love to help you find a person who is.

  • Sessions are 60 minutes long. I desire to craft a space that helps people feel loved, seen, and heard on their own terms. There is a bit of variety in the flow of a session since people come with different perspectives, theologies, cultures, and life experiences. I hope the time feels like a warm and meaningful conversation.

  • The vast majority of my sessions are online using Zoom/Google Meet or on the phone. If you are in the SE Houston area and want to meet in person, let’s talk!

  • The first step is to set up a free, 30 minute consultation to talk about what spiritual direction is and to see if we are a good fit for each other. If a person wants to move forward with spiritual direction, I suggest that the person initially commits to 4 monthly meetings. Around the 4 month mark we will talk about how things are going. If our time together is still meaningful, I suggest meeting monthly for ongoing spiritual and soul care.

  • My new flat rate is $65 per session in order to create more accessibility for my clients.

There will be an opportunity to tip after each session if you’d like to contribute more to the ministry. If $65 is not doable at this time let me know. We will work something out!

  • Following each session you will receive an email with an invoice from Square Up. You will have a secure link where you will be able to pay the agreed upon rate using a credit card. Note that your statement will show the payment going to TC Ampersand, the official company name.

  • I am deeply formed by the historical, global, multiethnic, multicultural, multilingual, and multinational Christian faith. I have been a part of a variety of denominations. I was raised in the Southern Baptist church and am very thankful for the women and men who took time to love me, encourage me, and build my faith. I attended a small liberal arts college with roots in the Presbyterian church. I received my masters and my spiritual direction certificate from seminary birthed out of the Quaker tradition. I worked for 7 years in the Presbyterian Church USA. I worked for 7 years in the Evangelical Covenant Church, the denomination where I have my pastoral credentials. Currently I am the lead pastor of an interdenominational Christian church outside of SE Houston. I am regularly shaped and moved by the revelation of God through the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. I resonate with the ways the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed articulate the Christian faith.

  • Life is hard. Sometimes people can hurt and even harm us. As a result, many of us carry trauma in our bodies and we don’t even know it. Tending to trauma in our lives is a critical part of our growth and healing as humans.

While I am not a Licensed Professional Counselor, I have attended training seminars and classes that equip pastors and spiritual directors to help people navigate trauma in their lives and bodies. Because of my training and lived experience, I can’t do spiritual direction without thinking about the ways trauma impacts our lives, bodies, and relationships.

Personally, the past few years I have been intentionally engaging with my own trauma. I am moving towards freedom as I heal. I have a professional coach, a spiritual director, and a therapist who have played critical parts in my healing journey.

Here are three books that I have found very helpful for my own healing and for my work as a trauma informed spiritual director: The Body Keeps the Score by Bessel van der Kolk, My Grandmother's Hands: Racialized Trauma and the Pathway to Mending Our Hearts and Bodies by Resmaa Menakem, and No Bad Parts: Healing Trauma and Restoring Wholeness with the Internal Family Systems Model by Richard Schwartz.
